Oh Goodie: Shocking Videos

I’m not about to dive into a censorship debate. If you’re interested in that, go find another blog. There’s really only one thing you can count on when it comes to opinions: everybody’s got one, which means that there just isn’t much of a market demand for them. I’ll just save it for now.

So recently a US soldier tossed a puppy off a cliff on video. If you feel the need to see it for yourself most “legitimate” media has done you the favor of making it easily accessible for your viewing pleasure. Lucky you, I’m sure you’ll thank them. For the record, I have decided to spare myself the trauma… but it’s up to you whether or not you think you “should” see it… or whatever…

As usual everyone is being (deleted) about it (long stupid rant deleted)

That’s the other thing about opinions: if you’re a betting man, put your money on the average opinion being whatever makes people feel good about themselves rather than anything that could be arrived at if one were to bother thinking about what one was saying.

So while I don’t have an opinion on censorship here I am sharing my opinion on opinions, oh how droll and clever why don’t I know when to quit oh god oh god…

I could go on, but I’ll let Sean Bedlam sum up my thoughts on the matter. Warning: he swears. Of course, if you’re honestly going to complain about that after watching a puppy get thrown off a cliff, you have bigger problems than I am qualified to address…

Activism Machinima

With all of the sorry and sad nonsense out there about “the terrorists”, who “can use and may already be using” v-worlds, I’ve never seen the slightest evidence. What I have seen quite a bit of, however, is v-worlds being used for activist causes. This cute little machinima recently arrived in my inbox, along with the accompanying text.

March 2, 2008: Thanks to the genetic fusion of a DV camera and egg timer, Future News Network, the yet-to-be merger of Newscorp, Time-Warner, the Berlusconi group, the Picayune Times and the cryogenised body of Rush Limbaugh, is bringing back to your present news from the future that you’re evidently looking forward to.
Traveling back in time to the year 2008 – a live video report from one of the newest competitions at the Beijing Olympics — the Dissident Run For Your Life 100 Yard Dash, with much more Technicolor than Leni Riefenstahl’s 1936 fair and balanced reporting could ever hope for.

I’m neither against nor endorse. What I will say is this: activism in v-worlds has been huge for quite some time. Terrorism? It’s questionable that it even exists*. And yet, which does old media pay more attention to?

Schisms like this make me wonder what’s wrong with the media these days. Time to tune in to reality guys.

*Note: Griefing isn’t terrorism, it’s vandalism. Let’s not get hysterical here.
