Changing How Media Works in Second Life

***DISCLAIMER: this is something I did on my own, not through anyone else, and is just being released through CalebBooker.com.

I’ve just released a bunch of tools for users who want video in Second Life to just work dammit. Find them here.

Why?

Imagine giving a presentation that includes video in Second Life. Several problems inevitably pop up:

  1. You have to fill out all of the details for the video in the parcel settings. This takes time.
  2. As soon as those settings are filled in, everybody with “Automatically play media” checked in their preferences starts watching it. Everybody else has to click the play button. Already they’re out of sync.
  3. If there are newer users in the audience, expect to spend 5 minutes describing where that Play button is at the bottom of their screen.
  4. At least one person keeps hitting Play in their viewer over and over even though everybody else is done watching and you’ve been speaking for a few minutes.
  5. You have to stop talking and fool around with the parcel settings again so that one person who complains they can’t hear you over the video will just stop it already…

With these issues in mind I created the Quick Media Player, which allows you to pre-load all the parcel settings, load them up with a single click, force everybody’s client to start playing it immediately, and then gives you the power to not only stop the video with a single click but also clear all settings instantly.

Inject some professionalism into your presentations!

Hopefully a little later this week I’ll find the time to release the multi-parcel video player I created.
