Changing The Way Second Life Works
I had mentioned before how I had been doing some work in the lab of late. Specifically, I asked:
Can I design new tools that enable new ways for small business to work?
Working with a scripter by the name of ab Vanmoer, we’ve designed a possible answer to the question.
Since the first day I entered Second Life I wondered why I couldn’t just hand someone a file. Be it an Excel spreadsheet, a PDF, a PSD, or some software, it just seemed so very strange that Second Life should be completely isolated from my hard drive.
The File Courier bridges the gap. You rez it, tweak the settings, upload the PHP file to your server (just once for all your files), and you’re ready to go. If you’d like a copy, there are two ways you can get it:
A few things now become possible in Second Life:
- Independent MP3 stores
- eBook stores (face it: you can’t read a lot of text in the SL window)
- Artists selling Photoshop templates
- Programmers selling small software apps
- Academics trading white papers
You get the idea. We’ll keep developing the product and updating the lab as we go, but meanwhile I’ll be watching for your feedback!
Funny, I’ve been asking myself the same question.
Unless you’re into “wallplaying”, seeing SL as something separate from everything else, the keyword is integration.
Even the simple fact that I can’t mail someone inworld from my mobile makes me wonder about those “corp integration” intentions people talk about.
I know there are a lot of formats, and several of them closed standards. But the regular business slash work slash non-cybering user do not care about it. Why use SL if I can’t
give you my ppt?
Yes precisely! When designing the Zebra Presenter I was constantly asking myself: “Why should I even have to do this? If Linden Lab is at all serious about corporate presence then PPT should be an integrated format!”
